NOT LIKE YOU (2019) – 29.7 CM X 21 CM – ALCOHOL MARKERS ON PAPER
This artwork, created for a 2022 exhibition at LiTE-HAUS Galerie in Berlin, delves into the profound yet playful connection between humans and monkeys, inspired by a page from the Newnes’ Pictorial Knowledge 1950s Encyclopedia about ‘monkeys and their ways’. The piece pivots around the thematic revelation that ‘monkeys resemble human beings more closely than any other creatures.’
The central figure in this artwork is a cheeky-looking gorilla delivering a three-part message to humanity. With a defiant middle finger, the gorilla symbolically says ‘screw you’ to humans for their role in planetary destruction, harm to others, and exploitation of animals. The phrases “Not like you”—expressing both dislike and disassociation—highlight a critical commentary on human actions.
The artwork employs humour to critique serious subjects. Humans often consider themselves superior, yet their actions—driven by hate, greed, fear, and love—frequently lead to destruction and suffering. In contrast, monkeys, embodying a simpler, more peaceful existence, are presented as arguably the more intelligent species. This piece challenges viewers to reflect on the dichotomy between human self-perception and the natural wisdom found in our closest animal relatives.
