Weekly Art Practice #5

What’s next in SLART’s art world?

Every Saturday I share my art practice over the past 7 days. I’m fascinated by artistic practice – it’s not just about creating art but the entire process. From influences and ideas to materials and skills, each artist’s unique approach shapes their work, making it more than just a finished piece.

Apologies,I’ve been a bit discombobulated this week. I returned to my day job on Monday and it has felt like an uphill struggle catching up with work and having my daughter in the evenings as my wife works until 8:30pm. (Cue violins 🎻) Hence both posts this week being a day late.

Thank you,

Thank you so much for joining me in my art practice this week.

Week 5

Sadly no studio time this week, but I should get some time there tomorrow.

My art practice this week, I’ve started envisaging the bigger picture. As two of my inspirations have done, Jean Dubuffet and Keith Haring, they’ve set up foundations for their art to carry on their legacy when they passed.

It will be called The SLART Foundation. (Dorky side note: As someone of my generation who loved WWF Wrestling, it sounds like The Hart Foundation who were a Wrestling Team in the 80s and 90s).

The SLART Foundation supports young people who enjoy creating art, but need the support and resources in making a career out of it. This is borne of my frustrations as a child and teenager, not having someone nudge me in the right direction and say “this is a valid career choice”. I don’t believe that formal education is needed for this to happen either.

Moving on to the creation of work. About 18 months ago, I decided to paint the back of one of my finished canvasses black, with the SLART logo stencilled in crisp white on top of the black. I thought it was a nice touch, as Steve Job’s was with the internal gubbings of the Mac, making it look beautiful. The rear of each canvas will now look beautiful, showing the SLART branding.
