THROUGH HIS EYES

THROUGH HIS EYES (2019) – 25 CM x 25 CM – ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS

This portrait of my father holds deep personal significance for me. During the last three years of his life, dementia had taken such a toll on him that he needed full-time care, something neither my mother nor we could provide at home. After my mum passed away on November 11, 2018, my brother and I went to visit my dad the very next day. He was unaware that she had died.

When we arrived, he looked at us and asked, “Where’s Wendy? Is she asleep?” That question hit me hard. As a spiritual person, I couldn’t help but wonder if he somehow sensed something, or if it was just a coincidence. It was one of those moments that makes you pause and reflect on the mysteries of life and connection.

In this piece, I tried to capture my father’s cheeky charm and kind nature, traits that remained with him even as dementia changed so much about him. His eyes, though affected by age, still held that spark I always knew. This portrait is more than just an image to me; it’s a way of holding onto the essence of who he was, even during the difficult times.
