80s nostalgia in art.
SLART NOTE: I painted these pieces in 2020 and they didn’t feature in my portfolio when I first built my website around the same time. I didn’t think they were very good, not worthy to share publicly. Now it’s a different story, these paintings are very much part of my artistic journey and as I look back at them, they bring me joy.
I hope you find joy in them too.
AM REAL HUMAN (2020) – 29.7 CM X 42 CM – ACRYLIC PAINT ON CANVAS BOARD
Short Circuit is one of my all-time favourite childhood films, capturing my imagination with its excellent soundtrack, the captivating story of a sentient robot, and the awe-inspiring backdrop of New York City. Growing up in a small market town, I was always mesmerised by the sheer size and energy of New York as portrayed in movies.
This piece is a tribute to that beloved film, capturing its essence in my unique artistic style. Through this work, I aim to document and celebrate the magic and wonder that Short Circuit 2 brought into my life, combining the film’s nostalgia with my artistic expression, just like how Johnny Five was filled with wonder when he first experienced New York City in the movie.
WHEN THE STUDENT IS READY (2024) – 42 CM x 29.7 CM – ACRYLIC PAINT ON CANVAS BOARD
The Karate Kid was also one of my all-time favourite childhood films. I related deeply to Daniel LaRusso as the underdog. Like Daniel, I took up karate as a child, and as a shy, overweight kid, I often felt helpless.
I vividly remember going to karate classes with my older brother, Gary. Unfortunately, the sensei was a bully who would often punch small kids in the stomach. Luckily, I had some belly fat, so it didn’t hurt as much.
Like Short Circuit 2, The Karate Kid also had a fantastic soundtrack that added to its magic and impact on me.
