The turtle's approach 🐢 Slow & Steady

World-Renowned Artist, SLART’s Weekly art practice: Week 39.

Author’s Note: Every Saturday, I share my art practice over the past 7 days. I’m fascinated by artistic practice – it’s not just about creating art but the entire process. From influences and ideas to materials and skills, each artist’s unique approach shapes their work, making it more than a finished piece. Just imagine having a weekly update from your favourite living artist. How cool would that be?

If this piece is too long for email, you can read it here in Substack. Or download the app.

2024 ING Discerning Eye exhibition

My work was too good and didn’t get selected.

Hayama 2025 Artist Residency

I’ve been applying for a four-week artist’s residency in Hayama, Japan, since 2022. Logistically, taking a month off work and managing family commitments will be challenging, but I’ll address that when the time comes. You won’t know whether I’ve applied until next week, as I’m still deciding.

Lessons from planning the Crypt gallery exhibition

It’s remarkable how acting on something boosts your confidence and knowledge.

Take the 2025 exhibition goal, for example. It involves numerous components that require understanding. The framework of the exhibition helps manage these complexities, particularly in fundraising. Initially, options like crowdfunding and business sponsorship seemed limited, and the thought of applying for Arts Council funding was daunting. However, allowing myself time to explore these aspects revealed that they were not as complicated as they first appeared, and soon more possibilities emerged, making the fundraising less intimidating.

“Whatever you dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.” — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Although progress feels slow, it is happening. Looking back over the past six weeks, the Memento Vivere exhibit has evolved from a mere idea to having a booked venue, a written plan, and budget and timeline. 🐢

Giving myself space for this mapping exercise has proved invaluable. Writing things down has not only clarified my thoughts but also reminded me of the support from people past and present. It’s easier than convincing strangers because it’s more about their desire to support me. (The exercise is: Mapping out everyone you know as a precursor to fundraising, as people who know you are more likely to support you than anyone else, simple eh?)

This week has been good; although I’m tired, I’ve been productive at work and with my art-related tasks at lunchtimes.

That is all for this reflection.

Before I go I’ll end with this insight.

“You have enough time; you just don’t feel like you do. Give yourself the time and headspace. This applies to trying new things that your mind tells you are too difficult. Grant yourself the permission and headspace to begin, and you’ll soon realise you can do it.”

Best wishes and deep blessings,

SLART.
